In June, 1998, I received an introductory lesson from Boma, who lived in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, West Africa, via an evangelist in nearby Bida. In August of that year, he wrote again saying: “Before this time, I am one of those group of persons in my region that strongly disbelieved the teachings of Christianity. I often lead a gang of unbelievers like myself to harass those that preach in the name of the Lord. We do this by physical embarrassment, manhandling, and intimidation. Many times when I heard about the goodness of God almighty, my heart would yearn for something but I could not find peace and deliverance from sin.”
When he returned the W.B.S. red book, he enclosed 10 questions regarding the Bible, salvation, the judgment, etc. and requested to be baptized. I referred him to an evangelist in Port Harcourt, and then to Brother Ernest Ozemelah who baptized him in July, 1999.
After baptism, he wrote me saying, “I thank God Almighty for all you have done in my life. I’m sorry, but I have to say that perhaps I wouldn’t be alive today if God hadn’t saved me through you. You came into my life and changed me from my wicked ways at a time when I thought life had no more meaning for me.”
Through Brother Ozemelah, Boma became active in a local congregation, studied with others, and lead them to obedience. This resulted in the baptism of his stepmother and eleven others. His stepmother, a wealthy woman, has generously helped the brethren, purchased new land for a bigger church, and even sponsored a W.B.S. seminar.
Since Boma’s parents were living in San Francisco, California at the time of his birth, he is a United States citizen. His parents separated when he was only three months old, and his mother took him to Nigeria where he grew up.
You can imagine my excitement when I learned that he was coming in January, 2002 to the Dallas area to stay with relatives. We then arranged to have him come to our house for a meeting. He plans to attend school in the States, and his ultimate goal is to become a minister of the gospel. He has applied for admission to Harding University and currently attends Waterview Church of Christ in Richardson, Texas, where I am a member and coordinator of the W.B.S. work there.
